GRAY — An Auburn woman remained in critical condition Thursday night with injuries she suffered when the car she was riding in hit a 1,000-pound moose on the Maine Turnpike in Gray.

A spokeswoman for Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston said Taylor Norcross, 27, was in critical condition.

Norcross was riding in a 2004 Infiniti sedan driven by Frank Gatto, 40, of Auburn, who was not injured. They were going north around 8 p.m. Wednesday when the car hit the bull moose, which was standing in the road. The impact sent the moose over the top of the car on the passenger side, taking the roof off.

The animal died in the crash, which was investigated by Maine State Police.

Gatto described the accident on his Facebook page, posting photos of the damaged car and a photo of the dead moose lying on a flatbed truck. “Not sure how either of us lived,” Gatto wrote.
