Championship games often come down to one player making one play at the right moment.

That’s what happened Saturday afternoon as junior striker Oneko Lowe scored 2:07 into overtime to lift Washington Academy to a 1-0 win over Waynflete in the Class C boys’ soccer state championship game at Presque Isle Middle School.

Lowe took a through pass from Simon Surin and pushed the ball past Flyers goalkeeper Milo Belleau, who had come out to challenge him.

The goal completed an undefeated season for the Raiders (18-0) and gave them their second state championship. Their first title was in 2008, when they also beat Waynflete, 2-1.

“He’s a very dynamic player that we man-marked the whole second half,” said Waynflete Coach Brandon Salway. “He’s very quick and got in behind us.

“Milo did everything right. He kept us in the game with a couple of great saves. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. It was just a great play by their player.”

The game was played in extremely windy conditions, which made it difficult for the team playing into the wind.

Both teams had their chances. Waynflete’s Aaron Lee got behind Washington Academy goalkeeper Cameron Varney early in the contest, but his shot was cleared by a defender.

Belleau made some key saves for the Flyers, who gave up just six goals all season.

“We certainly put up a challenge and had our chances,” said Salway. “But they were just a little better than us.”

Waynflete finished 14-3-1 against what Salway called the toughest schedule the team had ever played.

“We had a great season,” said senior defender Willy Burdick. “It was a great group of guys, a great group of seniors who really wanted to win a state championship. We just came up short. We played a really good Washington Academy team.”

The Raiders did not allow a goal in the postseason.

Salway said it was not easy to talk to his players afterward.

“It’s tough to come up with the words to help them feel better,” he said. “It was a great season, regardless of winning or losing this game. And we lost to one of the better Eastern Maine teams I’ve seen in a while.”
