BIDDEFORD — Becky Zakorchemny, who scored just four goals in the regular season, added two more in the first round of the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament Wednesday night, leading the University of New England to a 3-1 victory against Becker.

The Nor’easters (17-6) will meet Wellesley (16-3) in the second round at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Bowdoin will meet Keene State at 11 a.m.

The winners will play at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bowdoin for a spot in the Final Four at Lexington, Virginia.

“For us to have somebody different that hasn’t been in the scoring column, for (Zakorchemny) to come out and have that game today is huge for us,” said UNE Coach Danielle Collins. “It gives us another offensive threat. You can’t just stop one or two people on our team.”

UNE put 21 shots on net while keeping the ball on Becker’s end of the field much of the night, despite a sound defensive game plan by the Hawks (11-12).

“They kind of packed it in so we had to figure out a different game plan in that sense – going around and not going straight through,” said Collins. “Three goals is a respectable score but it could have been a lot more. They were able to keep us out for a long time. They played really well defensively. (Goalkeeper Gabrielle Gallo) made a lot of saves and they had some defensive saves in front of her.”

Gallo turned away 16 shots and defenders turned away two more, but Nicole Matarozzo of UNE added to her team lead in goals by scoring her 17th of the year after 17:22. She scored from Olivia Madore for a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, Zakorchemny added her first career winner, redirecting a bouncing ball past Gallo.

“Vondey Saunders had a really good pass,” said Zakorchemny. “She looked up and I was just in the right spot at the right time, got my stick there and found the back of the net.”

Zakorchemny added her second goal of the game 13 minutes into the second half, picking up a loose ball and sending a sharp drive into the cage.

“We play as a team,” said Collins. “No one really cares who’s going to be scoring. It’s a matter of just getting to the spot. For her, she was in the spot and she was able to get the touch on it. That’s what we’ve been working on all week because we struggled putting the ball in the cage in the conference championship game. We focused a lot on scoring and it’s something that carried over for us today.”

Brittney Bebeau of Becker, from Worcester, Massachusetts, scored with four minutes remaining.

“We just had to make sure we were keeping the energy up, keeping the talk up on the field,” said Zakorchemny. “We had to make sure we were telling each other to keep running, keep playing defense, get back. We had to just keep each other up.”
