BOSTON — Massachusetts motor vehicle officials will allow a Lowell woman, citing her religious beliefs, to wear a colander in her driver’s license photo.
Lindsay Miller said Friday she “absolutely loves the history and the story” of Pastafarians, who follow the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. She says wearing the spaghetti strainer allows her to express her beliefs.
A spokesman for the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles said policy does not permit head coverings or hats on license photos. However, exceptions are made for religious reasons.
Patty DeJuneas, a member of the Secular Legal Society who represented Miller, calls Pastafarianism a “secular religion that uses parody to make its point.”
She says she helped Miller, who sought the same protections afforded to people who belong to other religions.
