ALFRED – Here is a stunning property that is very probably unlike any other in southern Maine.

Welcome to Boldebook Estate, whose 24 beautifully private acres include 1,600 feet of waterfront on pristine, 78-acre Shaker Pond; a main house custom-created with the highest degree of craftsmanship using massive northern Canadian cedar logs, and measuring almost 5,000 square feet; two additional homes smaller in scale, but no less characterful and pleasing; and an assortment of outbuildings, ranging from a small pump house that can daily supply 80,000 gallons of water for the lawns’ irrigation, to a huge storage “shed” equipped with plumbing to accommodate arriving recreational vehicles.

The sheer scale and variety of the property makes it suited to a variety of purposes, including but not limited to corporate, sportsmen’s, or religious retreat (there is a tiny, 1800s Shaker burial ground here); horse farm, rehabilitation facility, and, of course, family compound. (Please note that the acreage has been surveyed for division of six lots, each of which is available.)

And the setting, with easterly views across the water to undeveloped land, is blissfully peaceful. “There is an unusually high percentage of unaltered shoreline surrounding this pond,” the state Web site notes, adding that the “principal species” including bass are “extremely abundant.”

On the water, there’s an open crescent for swimming and putting in a boat or dock, near the picnic pavilion with its pine-scented kitchen and “mess hall” designed to recall the classic Maine summer camp experience. A similar feeling is generated when you visit the three-level, paneled-walls cottage, which offers sleeping for six, and has a wonderful loft and endless rustic charm.

Like the cottage, the three-bedroom guest house has a screened porch with water views, but this home’s decor is modern and its aura luxurious. Two full bedroom suites provide the ease of one-level living.

The main house, whose center is a marvelous great room with a towering stone fireplace, has every amenity one could wish, including a gorgeous cook’s kitchen. And then there’s an unexpected delight: a 1950s, diner-style games room.
