The Portland Public Library celebrates the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” with an exhibit featuring contemporary illustrators’ views on Wonderland.

“Wake Up Alice!” runs through Dec. 31 at the library. The show also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the illustration department at the Maine College of Art.

This show explores the story as interpreted by 35 illustrators, all with a connection to MECA’s illustration department.

“Inspiration runs deep in Wonderland and the illustrations in this show are examples of how well Alice continues to engage creative spirits and lead them to visually play with themes and characters from the story,” said a press release. “Some pieces are straightforward references to the book, and some are cheeky puzzles with clues for the viewer to discover how they relate to a particular passage or quote.”

“Wake Up Alice!” is one of many anniversary shows around the world. For more information about the artists, go to wakeupalice.org.
