SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Wayne Simpson scored the go-ahead goal 7:23 into the third period and the Portland Pirates (8-10) scored five times over the final 13 minutes of the game to pull away for a 6-2 win over the Springfield Falcons (9-9) on Sunday evening.

The Pirates succesfully killed three penalties in the first period before taking a 1-0 lead when Rocco Grimaldi scored off assists from Rob Schremp and Garrett Wilson.

Springfield rallied to tie the game on a goal by Lucas Lessio just 1:08 into the second period.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until Simpson got the game-winner with assists from Wilson and Cameron Gaunce.

Rob Flick and Shane Harper each added goals to extend the Portland lead to 4-1.

Springfield cut the deficit to 4-2 with 4:17 left in the game on a goal by Laurent Dauphin.

Kyle Rau and Brett Olson each added empty net goals over the final three minutes to help the Pirates put the game out of reach.

Portland goalie Sam Brittain finished with 23 saves to earn the win. Louis Domingue stopped 31 shots for the Falcons.

Wilson and John McFarland were the only players who tallied multiple points for the Pirates, finishing with two assists apiece.
