Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins is the second most popular senator in the country among her own constituents, according to a poll of 654 registered Maine voters.
The survey, conducted by Morning Consult, is part of a larger national poll of more than 76,000 registered voters. The survey found that Collins’ 78 percent favorability rating is second only to U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, at 83 percent of his own constituents. Sanders is currently seeking the Democratic nomination for president.
Another independent, U.S. Sen. Angus King, also ranked favorably, at 65 percent.
The Morning Consult survey was conducted between May and November. The interviews were conducted online and the data were weighted to approximate a target sample based on age, race/ethnicity, gender, educational attainment, region, annual household income, home ownership status and marital status. The margin of error in the Maine survey is 3.8 percent. The error rate is higher in states with lower response rates and lower in those with higher response rates.
The Morning Consult conducts weekly national polls and statewide surveys. For its statewide polls, the firm uses random digit dialing to reach landline telephones, but not cellphones, in combination with online surveys.
