The city of Portland will offer free HIV testing Wednesday in commemoration of World AIDS Day.

The testing by the city’s Public Health Division will be held at 103 India St. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment at 874-8768.

World AIDS Day, which has been held Dec. 1 for the last 27 years, is dedicated to raising awareness of the spread of HIV, and to remember those who have died from the disease.

In the United States, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 1.2 million people age 13 and older are living with HIV, including 156,300 who are unaware of their HIV status. An estimated 1,810 Mainers were living with HIV as of 2014. There have been 35 new cases of HIV in 2015.
