Rich Smith has resigned after 28 years as coach of the Yarmouth High girls’ soccer team.

Smith, the only head coach in the program’s history, notified school staff members Wednesday via email of his decision, according to boys’ soccer coach Mike Hagerty.

“He’s been pondering this for a while. This was not a quick decision,” said Hagerty, Smith’s good friend and fellow middle school teacher.

Smith led Yarmouth to Class B state titles in 1995 and 2003. This season the Clippers were 7-6-3, advancing to the Class B South seminfinals before losing to eventual state champion Greely. Smith plans to continue as a fifth-grade teacher at Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth, Hagerty said.

“Rich is leaving coaching on his own terms,” Hagerty said. “You will not find a coach who treats his players better. He is kind, wonderful and thoughtful. I have two young daughters who I wish could play for him.”

Neither Smith nor Yarmouth Athletic Director Susan Robbins could be reached for comment.
