Criminal charges are expected to be filed against a man who overdosed in his car Sunday in the presence of a young child.

The man, whose identity has not been released by police, apparently overdosed on an opiate drug and was revived by Portland rescue workers using Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioids, according to police. The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Sunday in the area of 72 Commercial St.

A 5-year-old child was in the car at the time and was released to a family member.

According to police, passers-by noticed the unconscious man in the driver’s seat of a car that was resting against the curb. They called 911 and began CPR on the man, police said.

The driver was taken by ambulance to a Portland hospital.

The incident remains under investigation and criminal charges are expected, according to police. Police said it is not clear what kind of drug was involved.
