WILTON — A 14-year-old Maine student who started a diaper bank for families in need as part of a school project continues to be deep in diapers.

Gracie Ward of Wilton has collected more than 8,000 disposable diapers since she started The Little Tushies Diaper Bank in March.

The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that she has personally served 53 families and also works with Care and Comfort – a home health care service in her town.

She continues to receive coupons and donations from across the country and a Facebook page on her diaper bank has followers worldwide.

Ward says she started the diaper bank to raise awareness that all babies need clean diapers.

She won a $700 competitive grant from Farmington SOUP at the University of Maine, and put that toward her diaper bank.

Ward is home-schooled in most subjects and has an office in her family’s basement so she can spend more time on her project. She continues to receive diaper coupons from as far away as Colorado and receives donations at her GoFundMe web page.

“I have family and friends in all other states that are always ‘sharing’ my page and my information so I know my efforts are farther-reaching than just my awesome little town of Wilton, Maine,” Ward said. “I not only wanted to help my community, but I wanted to bring awareness to everyone everywhere that clean, fresh diaper need is a real issue and that families struggle to provide this basic necessity – no matter where they’re from.”
