ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland — Mike McKenna made 40 saves and the Portland Pirates got strong play from their special teams in a 4-1 win over the St. John’s IceCaps on Saturday night at the Mile One Centre.

The Pirates scored three goals in the first period.

Garrett Wilson got Portland started with his fifth goal of the season just 2:57 into the game. John McFarland added a short-handed goal at 8:25 and Rocco Grimaldi scored a power-play goal with assists from Shane Harper and Sena Acolatse at 10:54.

McFarland also set up Wade Megan for a short-handed goal 2:21 into the second period.

Gabriel Dumont scored on a power-play goal with 5:35 remaining in the third period for St. John’s, which peppered McKenna for 15 shots in both the second and third periods.

The Pirates have won eight of their last 10 games and 11 of their last 15.

Portland has beaten St. John’s twice this season and has won six of their last 11 meetings.
