Portland police on Friday charged a Portland man with elevated aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing of a 29-year-old man over drugs.

Police charged Corey Shepard, 25, with stabbing a relative, Sebastian Kelley, on Thursday night at 8 Cabot St. in the Sagamore Village neighborhood. Police said they did not know exactly how they are related.

Police were called to Maine Medical Center at 5:15 p.m. after Kelley was brought there for treatment of multiple stab wounds that were not life-threatening.

It appears the stabbing was the result of a drug dispute, police said.

After the stabbing, Kelley fled to Westbrook, and then was taken to the hospital by a friend.

The stabbing did not involve the 43-year-old apartment tenant, according to the Portland Housing Authority.

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call 874-8533.
