Regional School Unit 57 in York County announced the hiring of a new superintendent Thursday.

Larry Malone, who has been the district’s assistant superintendent since last year, was chosen to replace John Davis, who is expected to retire in June. Malone will assume his new role July 1.

“The Board and I are very pleased with Larry Malone and what we have seen of his work with our students and staff this year. We believe he has the skills and knowledge to effectively lead our district,” said Bruce Woodward, chairman of the RSU 57 school board, in a press release.

Woodward said Malone, a graduate of the University of Maine, has worked in education since 1984 and was most recently superintendent of RSU 50 in Dyer Brook for four years. Before that, Malone was principal of Mattanawcook Jr. High School in Lincoln.

RSU 57 covers Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Newfield, Shapleigh and Waterboro. There are seven schools in the district, including Massabesic High School in Waterboro.

Davis was hired as superintendent in October 2011. Last year he announced that he was planning to retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year.
