FARMINGTON – A Carthage father and son were indicted on drug charges, including trafficking and possession of heroin, along with charges of conspiracy.

Russell Smith of Winter Hill Road and his son, Anthony Smith of Tainter Corner Road, were indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on Thursday on separate charges of heroin trafficking, according to court documents.

Russell Smith, 51, was indicted on a Class B felony charge of unlawful trafficking of heroin, a Class C felony charge of possession of heroin, a Class C felony charge of conspiracy and a felony charge of forfeiture.

Anthony Smith, 30, was indicted on a Class B felony charge of unlawful trafficking of heroin, a misdemeanor charge of possession of ketamine, a Class D felony charge of falsifying physical evidence for allegedly swallowing some of the drugs found in his possession, along with a Class C felony charge of conspiracy and a felony charge of forfeiture.

The two were arrested at their homes in separate drug raids on July 30 after the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, the Maine State Police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency executed separate search warrants on their homes.

In the search of Russell Smith’s home, police found a “large amount” of drug paraphernalia and several thousand dollars in suspected drug proceeds, according to a July 30 police affidavit from Detective Stephen Charles.

In executing the search warrant on Anthony Smith’s home, police forced their way in and found him in the back of the house, according to the affidavit. He told police he needed to use the bathroom, where Charles reported that he saw him attempting to conceal, and then ingest, what appeared to be a bag of heroin, according to the affidavit. Anthony Smith was put in handcuffs after an altercation with Charles.

When told by police that they were searching the home for evidence of heroin use, possession or trafficking, Anthony Smith told Charles “that he had used or gotten rid of all that he had yesterday because he was aware that we were getting close,” the affidavit said.

Ketamine, used needles, a set of digital scales and drug paraphernalia, along with his cellphone, were seized from Anthony Smith’s home.
