Balanced scoring lifts Mad Ants past Red Claws

Terran Pittway had 23 points and six rebounds to lift the Fort Wayne Mad Ants to a 103-94 win over the Maine Red Claws in an NBA D-League game Saturday in Portland.

C.J. Fair added 22 points and eight rebounds, while Rakeem Christmas had 18 and seven for Fort Wayne, which had five players in double figures.

Coty Clarke scored 20 points for Maine, while Terry Rozier had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

AHL: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored twice in the first period and twice in the third period on its way to a 5-0 win over the Portland Pirates in Portland.

Scott Wilson, Tom Sestito, Josh Archibald, Sahir Gill and Tom Kostopoulos scored for the Penguins.

Mike McKenna made 23 saves for Portland. Tristan Jarry had 34 saves for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

GOLF

PGA: Jason Dufner birdied seven of his final nine holes at La Quinta Country Club to take a two-stroke lead in the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California.

Dufner finished with an 8-under 64 to reach 23-under 193 with one round left at PGA West’s TPC Stadium Course.

He opened with a 64 on Thursday on the Nicklaus Tournament Course for a share of the lead and had a 65 on Friday on the Stadium Course to take a one-stroke advantage.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler were part of a five-way tie for the lead at the Abu Dhabi Championship after Andy Sullivan made a triple-bogey in fading light to relinquish a two-shot advantage late in a fog-affected third round.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR HALL OF FAME: Bruton Smith, the colorful chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc., delighted the audience with an off-the-cuff speech while accepting his place in NASCAR’s Hall of Fame, touching on everything from his building of Charlotte Motor Speedway to his unwavering support of Coca-Cola.

Smith, who owns eight tracks that host 12 Sprint Cup Series events, had steadfastly maintained he didn’t care about making NASCAR’s Hall of Fame as he repeatedly failed to make the ballot of nominees.

Once he was finally elected, the octogenarian who recently completed treatment for cancer entertained the audience at the Charlotte Convention Center for almost 16 minutes.

Smith was inducted along with two-time champion Terry Labonte, modified great Jerry Cook, Bobby Isaac and Curtis Turner.

FIGURE SKATING

U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: The U.S. crowned new champions in ice dance and pairs, with siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani, and Tarah Kayne and Danny O’Shea each winning their first national title, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Shibutanis overtook defending champs Madison Chock and Evan Bates with a rousing free dance.

SOCCER

U.S. WOMEN: The United States women’s soccer team’s road to Rio got off to a smooth start.

Carli Lloyd scored three goals to help the U.S. defeat Ireland 5-0 in an international friendly in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium. It was the Americans’ final match before next month’s CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament for the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
