A 56-year-old man who lived alone died Sunday night in a fire in a house at 8 Bear Run Road in Gorham.

Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said when fire crews arrived they encountered flames shooting out first-floor windows. Firefighters entered the home, but by the time they reached Barry Dunlap, he was already dead.

Lefebvre told WCSH-TV that he and several other firefighters knew the victim.

“Dealing with it is not easy for anybody,” Lefebvre said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Gorham Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the State Fire Marshal’s Office, said the fire marshal investigates the cause of all fatal fires in Maine. The fire does not appear to be suspicious, Lefebvre told WCSH.

According to Gorham property tax records, the 1.5-story, three-bedroom log home was built in 1988 and is valued at $186,000.

The fire was reported at 6:43 p.m. Firefighters arrived at 6:52 p.m. Lefebvre said it has been several years since the last fatal fire in Gorham.
