Sam Rusak, Scarborough track and field: At an SMAA meet on Jan. 30 the sophomore cleared 15 feet to win the pole vault with the state’s top mark. The distance is a foot and a half higher than the mark that won the Class A title last year.

HONORABLE MENTION

Carl Bear, Gorham hockey: The senior led the Rams hockey team to a pair of wins in its last three games, scoring six goals and adding four assists.

Connor Perron, Falmouth swimming: At a meet Saturday at Greely High, Perron lowered his own pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 53.22 seconds, fastest in the state in Class A this winter. A junior, Perron swam 4:57 a year earlier at Greely to break a record that had stood since 1980.

Tim Yeaton, Seacoast Christian basketball: The senior totaled 64 points in three victories for the Guardians. He scored 24 points against A.R. Gould, 18 against Temple Academy and 22 against Greater Portland Christian.

GIRLS

Fiona Ahearne, Maine Coast Waldorf Nordic skiing: A senior at the New Gloucester school, Ahearne edged Lily Johnston of Freeport by 3 seconds to win the Sassi Memorial 5K classical race over a statewide field of 156 Saturday at Black Mountain in Rumford. Ahearne covered the course in 17 minutes, 16.3 seconds. She was one of five girls to break 18 minutes.

HONORABLE MENTION

Rebekah Guay, Biddeford hockey: A junior, Guay made 42 saves against Falmouth, and then recorded a shutout in a 6-0 win over Gorham/Bonny Eagle/Massabesic to secure a playoff spot for the Tigers.

Carter Harvey, Cape Elizabeth basketball: The senior guard scored 46 points in two victories to key the Capers’ playoff bid. She had 21 points in a 55-30 win over Biddeford, then added 25, hitting six 3-pointers, in a 47-33 win over Falmouth on Tuesday.

Chloe Smedley, York basketball: The senior forward scored 19 points in a 72-52 win over Poland, then added a team-high 18 in a 55-40 win over Fryeburg Academy to keep the Wildcats unbeaten.
