The average price of gas in Maine fell another 3.2 cents a gallon last week, lowering the statewide average to $1.85 a gallon, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 1,228 gas outlets in Maine.

Prices are now 35.3 cents a gallon lower than the same day a year ago and 21.7 cents a gallon lower than a month ago. Nationally, the average price has declined by 24.6 cents a gallon in the last month and is now 43.4 cents a gallon lower than a year ago.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $1.74 a gallon, according to the gasoline price website. GasBuddy’s historical data shows that per-gallon prices on Feb. 8 in Maine have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.20 in 2015, $3.47 in 2014, $3.76 in 2013, $3.60 in 2012 and $3.20 in 2011.

Maine’s $1.85 statewide average falls in the midrange of other northern New England prices, with Burlington, Vt. at $1.99 a gallon, down 3.1 cents from the previous week; Vermont statewide at $1.93, down 3.4 cents from the previous week; and New Hampshire statewide at $1.76 a gallon, down 3.2 cents from the previous week.

“Gasoline prices continue to plunge coast to coast as refiners continue to churn out winter-spec gasoline that will soon need to be purged,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. “While crude oil prices have held above recent lows, gasoline fundamentals continue to be remarkably weak as refiners continue to churn out winter-spec gasoline, incentivized by cheap crude oil.” He said he expected further declines until the winter gas blend inventory is depleted, and then the price is likely to rise as more costly summer blend fuels enter the market.
