Several animals died in a mobile home fire Monday afternoon in New Gloucester that firefighters had a hard time reaching because of slippery conditions.
Capt. Scott Doyle of the New Gloucester Fire and Rescue Department said the residence is at 36 Moose Ridge Road, a private road off Snow Hill Road. Doyle said a steep hill covered with snow was the only way firetrucks could get access to the home.
New Gloucester fire engines had to make several attempts to drive up the hill before they could reach the fire. When they did arrive, they encountered heavy fire coming from the mobile home’s windows.
A mutual aid fire engine got stuck and wound up blocking the driveway, which prevented additional firefighting apparatus from helping the crews on scene. Firefighters from Gray, Poland, Pownal and Raymond responded.
Crews had to pump water up the hill from Snow Hill Road, a distance of roughly 800 feet. No one was injured, but Doyle said “multiple animals were found deceased in the home.”
The fire, which was reported at 3:54 p.m., appears to have started in the kitchen. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
