The city of Portland has declared a parking ban for the peninsula starting at 10 p.m. and running through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Vehicles left on city streets in the peninsula zone after 10 p.m. will be towed at the owner’s expense.

City officials said the ban was being instituted to narrow streets of snow left over from Monday’s storm, which dropped several inches of snow throughout Maine and caused several accidents.

The cleanup effort is also being conducted in anticipation of below-freezing temperatures for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

The peninsula zone covers the area south and east of I-295 to the Portland waterfront, from Tukey’s Bridge to the I-295 bridge at the Fore River.
