Fort Kent’s Theriault to drive for Keselowski’s trucks team

Austin Theriault, a Fort Kent native, will drive one of Brad Keselowski Racing’s three entries in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-opening race Feb. 19 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida.

Theriault will drive the No. 2 Ford F-150 in the NextEra Energy Resources 250, joining full-time drivers Tyler Reddick and Daniel Hemric.

Theriault made his Truck Series debut last year at Daytona. He finished fourth, leading the race once for nine laps and earning a driver rating of 110.2.

Theriault made nine starts for BKR in 2015, claiming two top five and four top 10 finishes. Theriault had spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as part of BKR’s driver development program, running a partial schedule in the Southern Super Late Model Series while working full-time in the team’s shop.

U.S. WOMEN: Olympic cyclist Evelyn Stevens will try to break the world hour record this month when she takes to the recently renovated velodrome at the U.S. Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado

The distance traveled in an hour is one of the most hallowed challenges in cycling. But only in the past two years, since the UCI modernized and simplified rules for an attempt, has the record received renewed interest from some of the world’s best riders.

The current record of 46.882 kilometers was set by Australia’s Bridie O’Donnell in Adelaide on Jan. 22. Bradley Wiggins of Britain set the men’s mark of 54.526 kilometers last June.

PROTEST: Activists are planning a candlelight vigil outside the home of Baylor University’s president to protest what they regard as the university’s weak policing of sexual misconduct, particularly by student athletes.

BASKETBALL

D-LEAGUE: Omari Johnson of the Maine Red Claws was selected to compete in the NBA D-League 3-point contest before the league’s All-Star Game on Saturday in Toronto.

Johnson leads the D-League in made 3-pointers (94) and attempted 3s (231) and is shooting at a 40.7 percent from beyond the arc.

The 3-point contest begins at 1:30 p.m., with the All-Star Game slated for 2 p.m.

Other contestants in the 3-point contest are Jimmer Fredette (Westchester), Reggie Hearn (Reno), Andre Ingram (Los Angeles), Nick Minnerath (Canton) and Scott Suggs (Raptors 905).

ARGENTINA OPEN: Nicolas Almagro of Spain advanced to the second round of the clay-court event at Buenos Aires, defeating Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-3.

BOXING

GOLDEN GLOVES: Gabriel Morales and Barry Wilson, fighting out of the Portland Boxing Club, won their weight classes at the Northern New England Golden Gloves Championships in Burlington, Vermont, on Saturday.

Morales took a unanimous decision over Chris Fisk of Stockton Springs, Maine, to win the novice lightweight division. Wilson also won a unanimous decision, outpointing Ryan Antonivich of Springfield, Vermont, in the junior novice division.

In other action involving PBC fighters, novice lightweight Kate Zehr lost a split decision to Ali Watson of Burlington, Vermont, and Sasha Lamour lost an open class middleweight split decision to Rory Stapleton of Lancaster, New Hampshire.

BASEBALL

MAJOR LEAGUES: Free-agent outfielder Delmon Young was arrested after he choked and threatened a parking attendant at a Miami hotel Sunday night, police said.

Young, 30, who appeared in 52 games for the Baltimore Orioles last year, grabbed the attendant’s neck and called him a “stupid Cuban,” according to an arrest report.

n Outfielder J.D. Martinez agreed to an $18.5 million, two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.
