WESTBROOK — Locked into a tight game and with its top scorer sidelined because of pneumonia, eighth-seeded Westbrook needed someone to make a huge play Wednesday night.

Freshman Julia Martel delivered.

Martel hit a 3-pointer – the only one of the game for the Blue Blazes – with just over a minute to play and Westbrook held on for a 30-29 victory against ninth-seeded Cape Elizabeth in a Class A South prelim at Warren Gym.

The Blue Blazes (10-9) will meet top-ranked York (18-0) in a quarterfinal at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Portland Expo.

Martel, who finished with five points and seven rebounds, gave Westbrook a five-point advantage that held up in the low-scoring game.

She took a pass from the low block and didn’t hesitate in shooting.

“I still don’t think she realizes how big of a shot that was,” said Westbrook Coach Chris Aube. “To push it out to five in a game like that, that’s like 20. On that particular one, the ball went inside first and was kicked out, so she had a good look and was able to step into it.”

Added Cape Coach Chris Casterella: “That’s why you shoot the ball. If you’re open and it’s a good shot for you, take it. Martel made a huge shot. That’s probably the biggest shot of her season. Credit to them for making it.”

Westbrook played without Alisha Aube, a first-team all-league selection who averages 18 points per game but was forced to sit out because of pneumonia.

The Blue Blazes used a trap zone and a 26-17 advantage in rebounds to limit the Capers (7-12) to eight points in the first half while coming away an 18-8 advantage.

“Rebounding might be the most important stat come tournament time,” said Aube.

“If you can keep teams to one and done and execute, you’re going to be fine. We weren’t a very good rebounding team early in the year but we started to pick it up.”

The Capers, led by seniors Maddie Bowe and Carter Harvey, stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Blue Blazes 12-4 to pull within 22-20 entering the final quarter.

Bowe, who finished with eight rebounds, scored eight of her 13 points after halftime, while Harvey added seven of her 10 points in the final two quarters.

“They’re the reason we were still standing,” said Casterella. “They’re the reason we got into the playoffs this year.

“Both of them – (Harvey) going almost from obscurity, except for the tournament, going from a role player last year who played junior varsity, to having a phenomenal season. (Bowe) is just the heart and soul of what we have. If there’s such a thing as 110 percent, that’s her.”

While seniors led the way for Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook saw a big chunk of its scoring come from three freshmen.

Nyagoa Bayak scored a team-high nine points to go with seven rebounds, while Martel added her five points and Avery Tucker chipped in with four – combining to score 18 of the Blue Blazes’ 30 points.
