University of Maine football coach Joe Harasymiak has promoted Corey Hetherman from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator, the school announced Wednesday.

“Corey has a great defensive mind that will allow us to take the next step in achieving our success next season,” Harasymiak said in a press release. “His work with our defensive line last year speaks for itself with what they were able to accomplish.”

Hetherman joined the Black Bears’ staff before the 2015 season. Last year, Maine’s defense allowed just 110.8 rushing yards per game, second best in the Colonial Athletic Association. Maine also finished second in the CAA with 32 sacks.

Hetherman previously coached at Old Dominion, Northeastern University and Springfield College.
