SKOWHEGAN — An Abbot man pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of his father last year in Parkman.

Zachary Grant, 38, entered an Alford plea, which is a guilty plea without an admission of guilt, in Somerset County Superior Court.

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 31 in Piscataquis County Superior Court in Dover-Foxcroft and faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, according to the prosecutor, Assistant Attorney General Joseph Alsop. In exchange for the guilty plea, a charge of murder was dismissed.

Grant was arrested in May 2015 and charged with murder. He had been hospitalized for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, first at Eastern Maine Medical Center and later at Acadia Hospital in Bangor.

Maine State Police detectives said David Grant, 61, was found shot to death May 12 in the front yard of his mobile home at 114 Packard Road in Parkman, a back road between Route 150 and the Dexter town line.

Zachary Grant told detectives he got drunk, didn’t take his medication and said he does not remember fatally shooting his father, according to The Associated Press. Grant also has said he doesn’t remember going to his father’s house.

The state medical examiner determined that David Grant died from multiple gunshot wounds.

After consultation with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, state police detectives arrested Grant after his release from the hospital.
