Pirates earn overtime win over Wilkes Barre/Scranton

Mike Matheson scored 1:29 into overtime to lift the Portland Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Atlantic Division leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Sam Brittain finished with 24 saves for the Pirates, including stopping a penalty shot attempt by Carter Rowney with one minute left in the third period.

The Pirates opened the scoring 3:08 into the third period on a goal by Rob Flick.

Dominik Simon scored the equalizer for the Penguins with 8:59 left in regulation.

ARGENTINA OPEN: Rising star Dominic Thiem knocked former top-ranked Rafael Nadal out with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4) victory over the defending champion at Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Nadal is ranked No. 5 by the ATP and Thiem, a 22-year-old from Austria, is No. 19.

WORLD TENNIS TOURNAMENT: At Rotterdam, Netherlands, fifth-seeded Gael Monfils of France beat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-3, 6-2 to set up a final against Martin Klizan of Slovakia, who earlier beat qualifier Nicolas Mahut of France 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 6-2.

TAIWAN OPEN: Top-seeded Venus Williams beat Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the final at Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

ST. PETERSBURG LADIES: Belinda Bencic of Switzerland beat Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in a battle of 18-year-olds to book a St. Petersburg final against Roberta Vinci of Italy, who earlier downed Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic in straight sets.

Aerials WORLD CUP: American Mac Bohonnon and Alina Gridneva of Russia won the men’s and women’s rounds in Moscow.

Bohonnon took the win with a back double full-full-full jump for 124.43 points, with his U.S. teammate Jonathon Lillis second with 116.37.

n A women’s downhill race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, was rescheduled for Sunday after a heavy snowfall.

The race was initially postponed for two hours on Saturday morning, but organizers realized there wasn’t enough time to prepare the slopes after 2 to 3 feet of snow fell overnight.

n Alexis Pinturault led a 1-2 men’s finish for France in the giant slalom at Yuzawa, Japan.

CONCACAF: Carli Lloyd scored off a rebound of her own penalty kick in the 86th minute and the United States beat Mexico 1-0 at Frisco, Texas, to clinch a spot in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying semifinals.

Lloyd buried the rebound off a sprawled Cecilia Santiago for her 84th career goal.

n Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno scored three goals and Costa Rica defeated Puerto Rico 9-0 in a qualifier at Frisco, Texas.

Rodriguez, a 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy winner, helped Penn State to the NCAA women’s championship and was the second overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League draft earlier this year.

WOrLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Dutch skater Sven Kramer won the 5,000 meters for the seventh time at the world championships narrowly beating compatriot Jorrit Bergsma at Kolomna, Russia.

Host nation Russia had a one-two finish in the 1,000 as Pavel Kulizhnikov took gold in 1:08.33, a tenth of a second ahead of Denis Yuskov.

U.S. skater Shani Davis could only manage fifth place, ensuring the four-time Olympic medalist finishes the world single distance championships without a medal.
