I wanted to say what a fine and comprehensive job that the four articles about hunger in Maine (Jan. 24), written by Tux Turkel, did addressing this very serious issue.

The articles span the breadth of this problem and how Mainers respond to it: the pervasiveness of hunger south to north; the tremendous leadership and organizational role taken on by the Good Shepherd Food Bank; the network of pantries that directly provide food to those in need, and the origins of the food itself and how it makes its way into our hands.

In my circles, the articles have certainly gotten people talking about the need to find a real economic solution to hunger in Maine and reduce the reliance upon the current (albeit well-organized) stopgap efforts of charitable institutions.

Thank you for your in-depth write-up of our work at Stroudwater Christian Church and the mission of our pantry. Interestingly, since publication, our volume of families served has shot up dramatically, with 20 new families registered here in just the past week. Many who said they heard about us through your articles. Clearly your paper has been instrumental in guiding those in need to places where they can find relief.

Thank you for taking the initiative to do a thorough and well-prepared exposé on this problem.
