The Bangor Police Department is investigating allegations of a sexual assault that took place this past weekend inside a dormitory on the campus of Husson University.

“This is not a random incident, as the people involved are known to each other,” Bangor police Lt. Timothy Reid said in a news release Sunday. “At this time there is no continuing threat to the community.”

Reid said Bangor police are working in conjunction with Husson University on its investigation into the alleged sexual assault, which was reported Sunday morning. Bangor police said that no additional information would be released Sunday, as the investigation is continuing.

Eric Gordon, a spokesman for Husson University, released a statement Sunday evening in which he confirmed there is an investigation into an alleged sexual assault that took place at one of the university’s residence halls. Gordon did not name the dormitory.

“Husson University is fully cooperating with law enforcement as part of their ongoing investigation,” Gordon said.

Gordon said this was not a random act because there was “a relationship between the alleged perpetrator and the victim.”

“Husson University considers sexual assault and gender misconduct unacceptable. We work with faculty, staff, and students to help make our campus a safe and supportive environment through our bystander intervention campaign (It’s On Us),” Gordon said in the statement. “In addition, our Title IX process is designed to help evaluate, address and prevent incidents of sexual misconduct on campus.”

Gordon said that Husson University encourages students who are experiencing emotional distress or are in relationships with the potential for violence to seek professional help. Gordon added that the university’s Counseling Services Center provides free, time-limited services to all Husson students.

Husson University’s primary campus is located on a 208-acre property in Bangor. It currently enrolls about 2,800 undergraduate and 700 graduate students, according to its website.
