Two men were wounded Sunday evening when a pistol they were handling during a party in Brunswick accidentally fired.

The men were at a party at 8 Guadalcanal Drive when the a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun went off, said Patrol Cmdr. Marc R. Hagan of the Brunswick police. The home is in a neighborhood on the former Brunswick Naval Air Station property.

Hagan said a 29-year-old man from West Bath suffered a gunshot wound to his hand while a 28-year-old Brunswick man sustained a leg wound.

The West Bath man was taken to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick while the Brunswick man was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Hagan said the 29-year-old had reportedly shown the Brunswick man his handgun, which was unloaded at the time. When he reloaded the gun, it went off, firing a round that went through his hand. The bullet also hit the other man’s leg before hitting a refrigerator.

The men’s names are being withheld because the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed, according to police.
