BANGOR – A judge on Wednesday imposed a life prison sentence on a Bangor man who pleaded guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend in her apartment in November 2013.
In a rambling statement before the court, Zackery Mailloux asked the judge to sentence him to life in prison and Justice Ann Murray obliged with the maximum penalty for murder in Maine. The judge, who described details of the case as “chilling,” also sentenced Mailloux to 30 years in prison for kidnapping.
Both Mailloux, 23, and the victim, Brooke Locke, 21, of Auburn, were Husson University students at the time, and they’d formerly been a couple.
Mailloux was jealous and angry because Locke was breaking off their relationship, police said. He bound the victim and strangled her, police said.
Mailloux, who dialed 911 to report the death, pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping under a deal in which prosecutors dropped a rape charge.
Addressing the court, he asked Locke’s family and friends to focus on her life, not her death. But the judge said he didn’t show genuine remorse.
