FORT KENT — Maine’s biggest dog sled race is underway.

More than a dozen teams are participating in the Can-Am-Crown, a 250-mile race across the wilderness of northern Maine that serves as a qualifier for the grueling Iditarod across Alaska.

Participants include six-time winner Martin Masicotte of Quebec.

The race began Saturday in downtown Fort Kent. The route continues to Allagash before looping back to Fort Kent for a finish early Monday.

Trail conditions have been a problem elsewhere in Maine, and a dog sled race in the Moosehead lake region had to be canceled. But race official Beurmond Banville says course conditions are good after 18 inches of snow over the past week.
