A homeless man in Gray was arrested after a search by authorities who said he broke into a residence on Taylor Lane on Saturday morning and fought with one of the homeowners.

Randy H. Peterson, 28, was arrested around 3 p.m. Saturday, hours after the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office issued a public alert to residents in that area of Gray to be on the lookout.

The homeowners at 9 Taylor Lane were awakened around 6 a.m. by their dog barking and found the man, later identified by investigators as Peterson, in their kitchen, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

A male homeowner confronted Peterson, and they struggled. The homeowner suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Petersen was charged with robbery, theft, assault and on warrants for two counts of felony burglary and another warrant for a probation violation charge.

Earlier, the sheriff’s office described the Taylor Lane burglar as possibly possessing a knife and apparently under the influence of drugs. He was further described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall with black hair and wearing sweat pants. When Peterson was arrested, he did not have a knife, according to the sheriff’s office.

While investigators were searching for Peterson, the sheriff’s office urged area residents to keep their doors and windows locked and report any suspicious activity.
