A Massachusetts man was killed late Saturday night in a single-car accident in Weld, according to the Maine State Police. They said excessive speed and a deer in the roadway appeared to have caused the accident.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Richard Rogers, 58, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, was killed in the crash on Route 156 in the Franklin County town.

McCausland said Rogers was driving a 2006 Honda Civic in the northbound lane of Route 156 when he lost control, traveled onto the dirt shoulder of the road and went into a spin. The car crossed the centerline and struck a large tree.

Rogers died at the scene. There was massive damage to the rear of the vehicle. The crash was reported around 11:30 p.m.
