Sunday will bring a last gasp to the winter that never was, weather forecasters say.

A storm heading up the East Coast will “just skim” the coast of Maine and deliver about 4 to 5 inches of snow to the Portland area and southern Maine, said Margaret Curtis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray. The snow will start Sunday night and wrap up by midday Monday, she said.

Snow totals will drop off sharply away from the coast, with communities such as Lewiston and Auburn getting only an inch or 2. But midcoast Maine will likely get 4 to 6 inches of snow, Curtis said.

“The good news is it won’t last too long,” she said.

Temperatures will top out in the mid-30s Monday, Curtis said, but will rise into the 40s Tuesday and around 50 Wednesday and the rest of the week.
