AUGUSTA — Grover Norquist, the anti-tax crusader who founded Americans for Tax Reform, is supporting a Maine bill that aims to increase the amount of solar power generated in the state.
Norquist said in a letter to the Legislature’s energy committee that the bill would provide stability to the solar power market without shifting the costs of maintaining the electricity grid to other consumers.
He said the bill is more of a “free market-oriented” solution than current polices.
Proponents say the bill could increase solar power in the state tenfold.
The bill, a compromise between the state’s power companies and rooftop solar installers, has run into opposition from Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican, and Republican lawmakers.
Norquist is the creator of the anti-tax pledge that nearly every Republican in Congress has signed.
