Gardiner police are investigating a Sunday night incident in which they believe a local man accidentally shot himself in the leg in a Pleasant Street apartment.

Two Gardiner and two Maine State Police officers responded to an apartment complex on Pleasant Street to investigate a report of an accident at 9:56 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, according to Gardiner Police Chief James Toman, they found a 31-year-old Gardiner man outside who had suffered a gunshot wound.

Toman said the shooting took place inside an apartment, where the man was with several people. He was unarmed and outside when police arrived.

He was taken by Gardiner Rescue to MaineGeneral Medical Center where he was treated for a leg injury and released, Toman said.

Toman declined to identify the man because the investigation is ongoing, and he could face charges related to the incident.

Toman said alcohol was involved.

“At this point the investigation led us to believe it is a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Toman said. “Indications are it was accidental.”

Toman said at no time was the general public in danger because of the incident.

Police took possession of the weapon, a semi-automatic handgun.
