Coty Clarke returned Tuesday to the Maine Red Claws after his second 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics expired Sunday.

Clarke played 42 games with Maine, averaging 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

In three games with Boston, Clarke averaged 2.0 points and 0.3 rebounds.

To make room on the roster, the Red Claws waived Melvin Johnson III.

COLLEGE: Former Arizona State coach Herb Sendek was hired as Santa Clara’s new coach.

 David Skara sank the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 20 seconds left and Valparaiso held off BYU 72-70 at New York to reach the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament.

 Tyler Cavanaugh had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and George Washington advanced to the championship game of the NIT by throttling San Diego State in a 65-46 victory.

MIAMI OPEN: Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Dominic Thiem of Austria 6-3, 6-4 at Key Biscayne, Florida.

The world’s No. 1 player moved to 25-1 on the year, and is 27-1 in his last 28 matches on Key Biscayne. His next opponent is Tomas Berdych, who needed three tough sets to beat Richard Gasquet.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Aston Villa Manager Remi Garde left the bottom-place Premier League club – which includes U.S. keeper Brad Guzan – with seven matches remaining.

Garde, a former Lyon coach in France, lasted just under five months at the Birmingham club, where he replaced Tim Sherwood in November.

EX-CHAMP BOOKED: Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones was booked into the county jail in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a probation violation stemming from traffic citations he received last week.

AMERICA’S CUP: Part of the race, considered to be sailing’s most prestigious event, will return to New York City for the first time in nearly a century with a multiday event as part of a series of preliminary events leading up to the next year’s race in Bermuda.

The May 8-9 event will be along the Hudson River near Battery Park in Manhattan.

BOXING

FIGHTER IN COMA: Chris Eubank Sr. said he instructed his son to stop targeting the face of Nick Blackwell to “protect” the stricken boxer from a heavier beating in a British middleweight title fight.

Blackwell is in an induced coma after suffering bleeding to the brain, having collapsed soon after the end of Saturday’s fight against Chris Eubank Jr.

HOCKEY

WOMEN’S WORLDS: Hilary Knight got her third goal in two games and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scored the winner to help the defending champion United States beat Finland 2-1 at Kamloops, British Columbia.

Knight scored twice while the U.S. beat Canada 3-1 in its tournament opener Monday night. Canada finished second to the U.S. in last year’s tournament and the Finns were third.
