Three elementary school children were taken to a local hospital Thursday afternoon after the school bus they were riding in collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle in Boothbay. The SUV driver also was taken to the hospital.

“None of their injuries were considered to be serious,” Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett said Thursday evening.

Lt. Rand Maker of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said the school bus was transporting 12 students from the Boothbay Region Elementary School when a black 2003 Oldsmobile SUV heading south in the vicinity of 364 Back Narrows Road crossed over the center line, entered the northbound lane and hit the bus.

The driver of the SUV and three children were taken to the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus health care center in Damariscotta.

The school bus sustained minor damage and was driven from the accident scene, but the SUV was destroyed.

Maker said the identities of the drivers and any explanation for why the SUV crossed the center line won’t be released until Friday.
