George McCann never had a welcome home like the one he received Sunday at the Portland International Jetport. McCann, a retired Army infantry sergeant, was escorted off his flight from Washington by Earl Morse, the founder of the Honor Flight Network. There were bagpipes, a drum corps and the Portland police on hand to welcome him.

“Nobody’s ever done anything like this,” McCann told WCSH-TV. “For me to be in this position – why me? A lot of us, guys like me, guys I served with, who should have been here.”

Normally, Honor Flights are done in groups. But McCann, a resident at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor, was given a solo flight because of terminal illness.

He saw sites including the Korean War Veterans Memorial during his weekend in Washington.
