U.S. Navy officials announced Monday that the next Arleigh Burke-class destroyer built by Bath Iron Works will be named for former U.S. Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan.

The Navy held a naming ceremony Monday along the Detroit riverfront at the General Motors Renaissance Center. It was attended by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.

The destroyer is expected to enter the fleet in 2020.

Levin served in the Senate from 1979 to 2015, and was the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee.

Levin, a six-term senator, was ultimately the fourth longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate.

He currently is senior counsel at a Detroit law firm and chair of the Levin Center at Wayne State University’s Law School.
