TRENTON, N.J. — Dietrich Enns and Matt Wotherspoon combined to limit the Portland Sea Dogs to three hits and no runs through the first seven innings, allowing the Trenton Thunder (3-1) to open a 4-0 lead en route to a 5-3 victory over Portland during Eastern League play at Arm & Hammer Park.

The Sea Dogs, now 2-3, broke through for three runs in the eighth off reliever Matt Tracy to pull within 4-3. Cole Sturgeon lined a one-out triple and came home on Jantzen Witte’s ground out to score the first run for Portland. Rainel Rosario then drew a base on balls. Henry Ramos followed with the Dogs’ second triple of the inning to score Rosario before coming home on Jake Romanski’s infield single towards third.

After the Thunder scored in the bottom of the eighth on Dustin Fowler’s RBI double, Portland’s Tim Roberson drew a lead-off walk to bring up the tying run in the top of the ninth. But Trenton’s Mark Montgomery induced ground outs by Jose Vinicio and Mike Miller before striking out Sturgeon to end the game.

Jake Cave, Dante Bichette Jr. and Juan Silva opened the bottom of the fourth for Trenton with consecutive singles for a 1-0 lead. Bichette came home with the second run of the inning on Kyle Higashioka’s fly out to center. The Thunder added single runs in the fifth and sixth on a sacrifice fly by Silva and Lane Adams’ RBI single.
