CAPE ELIZABETH — Isabel Canning scored with a minute left in overtime Thursday to give Waynflete an 8-7 victory against Cape Elizabeth in a Western Maine Conference girls’ lacrosse opener.

Thursday was the opening day for spring sports in Maine.

Canning had two goals, as did Laura Baginski and Christian Rowe for Waynflete.

Mariah Deschino and Caroline Coburn scored three goals each for Cape Elizabeth.

MARSHWOOD 15, SOUTH PORTLAND 3: Hannah Costin had five goals and an assist to lead the Hawks over the Red Riots at South Berwick.

Reagan Nichols, Lucy Albers and Marin Smith each added three goals for Marshwood, which led 12-1 at halftime. Nichols also had two assists.

Madison Cyr led the Red Riots with two goals. Molly Walker had the other.

BASEBALL

YORK 11, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: Forrest Kelley drove home four runs and Trevor LaBonte pitched a one-hitter as the Wildcats won in five innings at York.

Kelley’s three-run homer gave York a 3-0 lead in the first. The Wildcats added three in the second before Kelley hit an RBI double during a two-run third.

LaBonte struck out eight, allowing a lone single to Shane MacNeill.

GREELY 15, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 2: Justin Leeman and Calvin Soule each had two hits and three RBI to lead the Rangers to a five-inning win at Cumberland.

Leeman finished 2 for 3 with a double, Soule went 2 for 4 and Caleb Normandeau scored thee runs for the Rangers.

Ryan Twitchell allowed two runs on four hits, striking out seven in four innings of work to earn the win.

Hunter Day collected a pair of hits for the Raiders.

SACOPEE VALLEY 27, WAYNFLETE 0: Brandon Burnell struck out 12 in a no-hitter as Sacopee Valley won a five-inning game at Portland.

Patrick Westberry had a three-run homer, Devin Day added three hits and scored four times, and Brady Anderson finished with two hits and four runs.

MARSHWOOD 7, NOBLE 2: Zach Doyon’s two-run single capped a four-run second inning as Marshwood took command at North Berwick.

Nate Curtis struck out five, holding Noble to four hits and an unearned run. Keith Dorr finished for the Hawks, and gave up an unearned run and one hit.

Doyon and Nick Landis had two hits apiece for Marshwood. Matt Chambers had a pair of hits for Noble.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 17, BUCKFIELD 6: Every player in the lineup scored for Old Orchard Beach in a five-inning game at Buckfield.

Joey McCullum went 2 for 4 with three RBI and three runs, Kyle Allen scored four times, and Dustin Brown and Jon Gillis each added two hits for Old Orchard.

Allen also got the win, striking out four and walking two in four innings.

Jacob Kraske had two hits and two RBI for Buckfield.

SOFTBALL

WELLS 12, CAPE ELIZABETH 4: Anya Chase and Olivia Clay each went 5 for 5 and combined for four runs to lead the Warriors at Cape Elizabeth.

Clay had one RBI, and Chase drove in two runs and also pitched a complete game, allowing five walks and striking out eight.

Megan Nicholson had a pair of hits with a double, and Tess Haller and Kelly O’Sullivan each had two hits for Cape Elizabeth. Jessica Robicheaw struck out nine and walked six in six innings.

FREEPORT 8, LAKE REGION 7: Kasey Erlebach scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a four-run rally for the Falcons at Naples.

Freeport, trailing 7-4, had six straight hits to start the seventh. Alexa Koenig drove in Erlebach to end the game.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

CAPE ELIZABETH 17, WAYNFLETE 8: Connor Thoreck scored four goals to lead Cape Elizabeth at home.

Owen Thoreck, Jay Bottomley, Tate Perkins and R.J. Sarka scored three goals each for Cape Elizabeth, with Owen Thoreck adding five assists, Bottomley three and Perkins two.
