High school names delegates to Dirigo State programs

Falmouth High School has announced the names of juniors selected to serve as delegates for Dirigo State programs.

The 69th Annual American Legion Dirigo Boys State will be held June 19-23 at Thomas College in Waterville

Students who will attend are Reed Lonsdale, Ben Rudnick, Ben Simonds and Brock Issac Welch.

The Dirigo Girls State will be held June 19-24 at Husson University in Bangor

Students who will serve as delegates are Alaina Birkel, Adelaide Cooke, Meghan Dye and Hannah Michaud.

Tuition for both teams was provided by American Legion Post No. 164 and the Falmouth Lions Club.

BIDDEFORD

High school students train for emergency preparedness

Biddeford High School students are taking part in a York County Emergency Management Agency Student Tools for Emergency Planning program to ensure community emergency preparedness.

This pilot program is the first of its kind in the nation.

Participants are Joshua Dutremble, Alex Keely, Jessica Letellier, Jeremy Lugiano and Jocelyn Moody. Their training included learning the difference between emergencies and disasters, how to develop a communication plan with your family and how to put together an emergency kit. They also taught fifth graders at Biddeford Intermediate School how to be prepared and safe in an emergency situation.

Middle school students to take part in honor bands

Several Biddeford Middle School music students have been selected to participate in the John Philip Sousa National Honor Bands New England Region this Thursday through Saturday at Gorham High School.

They are Chevelle Berthiaume, Olivianna Bridges, Michael Delorge, Aurelia Leonard, Elizabeth Mills, Emily Posson, Maliha Raida, Emma Rousseau and Noah Rousseau.

The festival is open to woodwind, brass and percussion players in grades 7 through 12 from around New England.

More than 1,200 schools were invited to recommend students for participation in the event, with about 150 students selected.

A concert will be given at 3 p.m. in the McCormick Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School.

Auxiliary donates $50,000 to aid labeling equipment

Southern Maine Health Care recently received a donation of $50,000 from the SMHC Auxiliary. It will be used to upgrade specimen labeling equipment at the Sanford Emergency Department.

Over the last few years, SMHC has invested in Mobilab technology, a bar-coding system used to prevent patient errors and ensure accuracy in specimen collection.

Therapeutic riding center recognizes its top volunteers

Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Center recently recognized the work of its volunteers at its annual volunteer appreciation event.

The center’s President’s Volunteer Service Award was presented to 21 people for serving more than 100 hours each.

Bronze level winners are Jo Blinick, Cindy Elder, Trish Friant, Margi Huber, Hannah Jud, Fran Maxwell, Ellen Ward and Donna Warren.

Silver level winners are Janis Childs, Elizabeth Elcock, Barbara Foster, Alissa Lovley, Jodi Peasley, Clayton Peters and Bryony Urquhart.

Gold level winners are Mark Fuller, Julia Hamilton, Dan Morabito, Pat Niboli, Patty Shaw and Paulette Shepard.

The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award winners for Maine residents who volunteered 500 hours or more in the past 12 months are Mark Fuller, Dan Morabito, Pat Niboli, Patty Shaw and Paulette Shepard.

Special recognition of outstanding service to RTT was given to Mark Fuller, volunteer of the year; Nicole McFrland, youth volunteer of the year; Jodi Peasley, administrative volunteer of the year; Barbara Foster, rookie of the year; Hannah Jud, volunteer schooler award and Clayton Peters, Bbarn volunteer of the year.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH

Library seasonal Book Shed open for donations, sales

The Old Orchard Beach Book Shed is open for the season, located just off the parking lot of Libby Memorial Library at 27 Staples St.

Organized and run by the Friends of Libby Library, the Book Shed has available gently used books, DVDs, CDs and other items.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through September.

Donations of new and gently used books, DVDs and CDs are welcome and can be brought directly to the Book Shed or Libby Memorial Library front desk and not put in the library’s book return bins. No textbooks, magazines or encyclopedias please.

Ryan Giles named Goodwin Campership recipient

Ryan Giles of Brunswick, a member of Boy Scout Troop 648 in Freeport, has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the Craig Goodwin Campership.

Issued by the Troop 160 Memorial Scout Camp, the Craig Goodwin Campership is given annually to a scout who has limited financial means but shows willingness to work hard to pay his or her own way.
