Navy Midshipman Rebecca Sweem of Richmond participated in the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps ship selection draft as a future member of the Navy’s Surface Warfare Officer community.

More than 280 midshipmen at 70 NROTC units around the country have been selected to serve in the Navy as SWOs.

Midshipman may select their preference of ship or homeport. Sweem, a 2012 Richmond High School graduate, chose to serve aboard the USS McCampbell. She is majoring in mathematics at Norwich University. Upon graduation, she will receive a commission as a Navy ensign and report aboard McCampbell as a surface warfare officer.

Master Chief Information Systems Technician Nelson J. Oconer Jr. of Portland recently was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during his retirement ceremony in San Diego, Calif.

USS Makin Island Commanding Officer Capt. Jon P. Rodgers presented the award to Oconer in the ship’s hangar bay in San Diego.

Oconer served 25 years in the Navy.

Retired World War II Army veteran Bernard Kinney, 92, recently was honored for his service to the country during a breakfast hosted by American Legion Post 128 at Standish.

The organization’s national commander, Dale Barnett, presented Kinney with a certificate of appreciation from the citizens of Maine in recognition of his service during World War II, and for his 51 years of continuous membership with the Legion.

Kinney shared some personal stories from his life and supported Barnett’s earlier keynote theme of “Duty, Honor, and Country.”

The event included state representatives Lester Ordway and Jonathan Kinney, who is Kinney’s son.
