Jake Romanski is a catcher, not known for his speed. But there he was flying around the bases in the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Romanski scored from first base on a two-out double by Jordan Betts, giving the Portland Sea Dogs a 1-0 win over the Trenton Thunder before a crowd of 5,033.

“My mind was going faster than my legs, I’ll tell you that much,” Romanski said. “Right away, I was going home. I knew I had to get there.”

Romanski, serving as the designated hitter Wednesday, kept the inning alive with a two-out single to left field. Betts, who joined the Sea Dogs on Monday, came up to bat and fell behind 1-2 to reliever Matt Tracy.

“I was looking for a pitch to take the other way,” Betts said. “Fortunately, with two strikes, I got a breaking ball over the plate and was able to drive it to the (right-center) gap.

“Kind of moment you dream of: Two outs, two strikes and the game on the line. You don’t always get the job done but, today, I did.”

Romanski, going on contact, scored without Trenton making a throw home.

The game was a battle of pitching staffs. Sea Dogs starter Teddy Stankiewicz lasted six innings, allowing four hits and no walks. He struck out six.

Williams Jerez relieved for two scoreless innings. Luis Ysla (1-0) got the win with a scoreless ninth, despite two walks.

Trenton lefty Daniel Camarena, who missed last year because of bone spurs in his elbow, started and threw four innings of two-hit ball. Reliever Matt Wotherspoon followed with three no-hit innings. Tracy entered in the eighth.

Portland (6-8) won its second straight game. Trenton is 7-6.

The Sea Dogs will take Thursday off and return to Hadlock Field on Friday for a 6 p.m. game against the Hartford Yard Goats. The game was originally scheduled to be in Hartford, but the Yard Goats’ stadium is not ready.
