A 78-year-old man from Parkman who went for an ATV ride early Thursday afternoon got lost in the dense woods near his home and wasn’t located until 10:30 p.m.

Maine Game Wardens launched a search for Gene Wilbur after his wife and other family members became worried when he didn’t return home from an ATV ride near his home on Route 150 in Parkman, a rural town in Piscataquis County. Wardens, with the help of a canine unit from a local police department and a Maine Air National Guard helicopter, first discovered Wilbur’s abandoned ATV on a logging road on his property. Shortly after that, wardens made voice contact with Wilbur, who had hunkered down in a bog.

Warden spokesman John Macdonald said in a press release Friday that Wilbur was found in fair condition. It took wardens approximately two hours to walk Wilbur out of the woods, after which he was taken to Mayo Regional Hospital in nearby Dover-Foxcroft for evaluation, Macdonald said.
