YMCA hosts Healthy Kids Day

The YMCA of Southern Maine will hold its 25th annual Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at all four branches.

The event will feature a variety of activities promoting health and well-being for kids and families. They will include access to bouncy houses, visits by mascots Slugger and Crusher, touch a fire truck, book fair, music, taste test, and more to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.

The branches are located at Portland, Casco Bay in Freeport, Pineland at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, and the Northern York County at Biddeford.

School district awards night

The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District will present the 30th Annual Literary Achievement Awards during a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Wells Elementary School cafeteria.

The event will recognize the 59 student winners of this creative writing contest.

The 13 first-place winners of the contest will read all or a portion of their winning short stories and poems to the audience. First-place winners, from kindergarten through grade 12, respectively, include Eva Talevi, Francesca MacEwen, Brandon Talevi, Ellie Moore, Sarah Ackerman, Jackson Meagher, Auguste Ciorra, Julie Mott, Felicia DesJardins, Parker McDermott, Anya Chase, Marissa Mizzoni and Seamus McDonough. These students each will receive $100, while McDonough will receive a $500 award as the first-place winner overall.

Second-place winners will receive $50, third-place winners will receive $25 and honorable mentions will receive $10 gift certificates.
