A Scarborough woman who is a student at Keene State College in New Hampshire is in a hospital after being hit by a car last Wednesday in downtown Keene.

Abbie Sweatt, 21, suffered serious head injuries but was in satisfactory condition Monday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, according to The Keene Sentinel.

Lt. Jason Short of the Keene Police Department said the driver of the car, Dolores Blanchard, 87, of Swanzey, New Hampshire, was driving north on Main Street near its intersection with Elliott Street on Wednesday when she hit Sweatt, who was walking in a crosswalk.

Blanchard was issued a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian. Short said investigators don’t believe that speed was a factor.

Sweatt’s friends and family have established a GoFundMe website to raise money for Sweatt’s medical expenses and transportation. It will cost $3,000 to transport her to Maine for rehabilitation. A message on the website said that insurance will not pay for transportation. As of Monday, her family and friends had raised more than $5,700.

Sweatt was scheduled to graduate in two weeks.
