An unseasonable storm brought a few inches of wet snow to many areas of southern Maine on Tuesday.

The snowfall also snarled traffic and contributed to a smattering of car accidents.

In Portland, 2.2 inches were recorded at the jetport, according to the National Weather Service office in Gray.

The most snow was recorded in Durham, which got 4.5 inches, and Bridgton, where 4.4 inches fell. Gray had 4 inches; North Sebago, 3.7; Alna, 3.5; and Otisfield, 2.

State police responded to several minor accidents on the Maine Turnpike between Kittery and New Gloucester, including a crash in the high-speed toll lane between Exit 75 in Auburn and the New Gloucester barrier toll at Mile 67.

The speed limit was reduced to 45 mph along the length of the turnpike from Kittery to Augusta, but was restored to normal as of about 3:10 p.m.

On local roads, conditions were not much better.

A single car went off the road in Naples and flipped over in the area of 457 Sebago Road, according to authorities there.

A dump truck overturned on Flying Point Road in Freeport about 11:50 a.m. in the area of Pettengill Hill, according to authorities. No one was injured in the crash.

The 2.2 inches recorded at the Portland International Jetport ranked third for snowfall on or after April 26, according to the weather service office in Gray. The latest spring snowfall in Portland came on May 10-11, 1945, when 7 inches fell.

Temperatures were expected plummet into the 20s Tuesday night, the weather service said.

Wednesday will bring another change of pace, however, with sun in the forecast and a high of about 51.
